Memorial service to be held for beloved Hawaii Island lawmaker

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A public memorial service is being held at the Hawaii State Capitol to honor former state Rep. Mark Nakashima.
Nakashima, 61, passed away in July after suffering kidney-related health complications, following a two-decade battle with diabetes.
The former Hawaii Island lawmaker was elected to District 1 in 2008 and represented the Hamakua Coast, parts of Hilo, and Kaumana. He served until his passing and had planned to seek re-election.
He held several leadership roles throughout his career, including chairman on Judiciary and Hawaiian Affairs, and vice chairman of the Higher Education Committee. Nakashima’s efforts is known for bringing new improvements to the Hilo Medical Center’s cancer treatment center.
Memorial visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service will also be livestreamed on Olelo Channel 53 and the Hawaii House Majority Facebook page.
